The Formula for Failure: Trying to Please Everyone All the Time

I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time. ― Herbert Bayard Swope

This quote by Herbert Bayard Swope is a powerful reminder that true success is not about trying to please everyone, but rather about staying true to oneself and following one’s own passions and goals.

One of the biggest obstacles to achieving success is the tendency to try and please everyone around us. We often feel the pressure to conform to societal expectations, to meet the demands of our family, friends, and colleagues, and to strive for the approval of others. But in doing so, we can lose sight of our own values and aspirations, and become trapped in a cycle of trying to please others at the expense of our own happiness and fulfillment.

The truth is, it’s impossible to please everyone all the time. And even if we could, it would be at the cost of our own well-being and happiness. When we try to please others, we often compromise our own values and beliefs, and neglect our own needs and wants. This can lead to feelings of resentment, frustration, and ultimately, failure.

The key to success is to focus on our own values and passions, and to be true to ourselves. This means having the courage to set boundaries, to say no to things that don’t align with our values and goals, and to pursue our own interests and passions. It also means being open to feedback and constructive criticism, but not allowing it to dictate our decisions and actions.

Another important aspect of success is being able to take risks and embrace failure. Failure is a natural part of the journey towards success, and it can often lead to valuable lessons and growth. When we are willing to take risks and accept the possibility of failure, we open ourselves up to new opportunities and experiences.

In conclusion, trying to please everyone all the time is a sure-fire formula for failure. True success comes from staying true to ourselves, and following our own passions and goals. It requires courage, self-awareness, and the willingness to take risks and embrace failure. Let’s not waste time on pleasing everyone and start focusing on what really matters.

  1. I think there might be an interesting book on this: “Come smettere di farsi le seghe mentali e godersi la vita” by Giulio Cesare Giacobbe. I didn’t read that one yet, but it is on my reading-list. I read another one by him in German, which was really well written.
